DTA 2.0 - New and Improved

We're very excited to present to you the new and improved Drive The Americas.  We spent several weeks porting the old Mediawiki-based website over to a Drupal platform.  What does this mean and why did we bother?

  1. Easier editing: No more wiki markup!  This means it is simple and straightforward for anyone to edit and contribute.  Try it out!  If you're on any page that has an 'edit' tab below the article's title, click edit to poke around.  Editing articles should now be as simple as using any word processing software.  And don't worry, if you make any mistakes or delete anything, we have a handy tool to help revert changes if necessary.  So dive in and start contributing!
  2. Better commenting:  The old Mediawiki system wasn't very friendly to making comments on articles - now at the bottom of most articles you can leave your thoughts by simply filling out the comment form.
  3. Improved forums: Posting and responding forums should be easier than ever.  And if you want to be notified if someone responds to your post, simply click the Subscriptions options below your post and subscribe to posts.
  4. Better site navigation: We reorganized the site and tried to break down really long articles into smaller more concise pieces.  We hope it makes it easier and faster for you to find the information you're looking for.   If you do have trouble finding something you need, please contact us and let us know so we can work to improve the site's navigation.
  5. User profile:  You can now have a much more informative user profile.  Simply log in, and click on the My Account link below your name on the left-hand side panel.  Click on edit, and then you can add Personal Information including links to your personal and/or travel websites.

But we're not stopping here.  In the next several months we will continue to improve the site.  We anticipate making the following changes (as long as our jobs don't get too much in the way of our work on the site):

  1. Social networking:  One of the best parts of our travels was meeting fellow roadtrippers.  We want to make it easier for people to meet up, so will be working to achieve that in the next iteration
  2. Forms for roadtripper profiles: No longer will you need to contact us to post your profile on the site.  We will be rolling out a simple form for you to add pictures, write about your travels and link to your blog.
  3. Contributed articles:  We want your writing!  We plan to start publishing articles about traveling, and are looking for content.  Favorite place, best surf spot, yummy food, worst horror story - let's keep the content fresh and keep the community growing!
  4. Geolocation:  Being able to post your current location on a map would be a fun way to see where people are, and help find nearby roadtrippers.
  5. Your wish list:  We want to hear from you - if you think there is some feature we should include for future upgrades, let us know.

We'd love to hear from you - shoot us an email or leave a comment at the bottom of this page.  Let us know what you think of the new site, if you'd like to contribute a travel article, or have any suggestions.  Happy travels!
