Bringing a cat to Central America

We're planning our trip through Central America from Vancouver BC and I'm looking for information on taking pets along. I'm having a hard time deciding if I should bring my cat along. Behavioral issues aside, has anyone had difficult experiences? My biggest concern is crossing borders, what kind of documents will I need etc?
