I was wondering for the people that bought Mexican auto insurance, did you have
to keep your current insurance from you own country valid? so question is i have
to keep 2 auto insurance on my car?

I ask this because auto insurance in Toronto Canada is insanely expensive.

thanks for any suggestions and could you tell me what company you bought
with?

thanks

Hi Jimmy,

We used Sanborn's they will insure in Mexico, Central and South America. The info is available here: http://www.drivetheamericas.com/wiki/Vehicle#Insurance_Contacts

Good luck!

thanks Kelsey, i was told that Sanborns needs you to keep your existing plan from
USA or Canadian insurance updated? is that true with you? I don't want to buy
2 insurances

As far as I know they do not require that you maintain your other insurance but I would recommend calling them to clarify. Our insurance in Canada would only cover us in Can and in the US so we cancelled it once we arrived at the US/Mex border.

We do know others who have Sanborn's without having to maintain their home country insurance.

Hey Jimmychu,

You can get a "resident use" policy and not have to keep your Canadian coverage active....that way you don't have to pay for both!

I actually use Baja Bound...and work there too! I am not sure why Sanborn's does not offer that option. We are both brokers for the same underwriter -HDI Seguros- that offers the "resident use" policy.

Hehe.

Baja Bound has been around for 16 years....we started off as a drive through Mexican insurance agency near the San Diego-Tijuana border in 1994. In 1999 we moved to an online service and now have an office in downtown San Diego.

  Sanborn's requirement

I just wanted to add that Sanborn's told me they require you maintain US (or Canadian?) insurance if you want full coverage; they don't require it if you only want liability coverage. That said, they never asked for proof of active US insurance for full coverage, but maybe they would if a claim was filed. So if you only want liability coverage you could go with Sanborn's if you prefer.

  We just went through this

We just went through the Mexican Insurance situation and basically when we bought the policy, we had to have a US Insurance policy number (even though we are foreigners). However, once we crossed the border, I cancelled our US Insurance (as you rightly said, they won't help you out in Mexico anyway), and we were refunded the remainder of the premium. Our car is really old so it was only liability insurance but they still required some proof of US insurance- but it's not like they call the company to make sure. We are with HDI Seguros. They also technically said we should have full coverage US insurance but you just don't mention any specifics, give them the policy number and that is that. Sure you could do the same with Canadian insurance.
