[edit] Wikis and this Website

A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language.[1][2] Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. The collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of the best-known wikis. "Wiki" (/wiːkiː/) is a Hawaiian word for "fast"[3] Drive the Americas uses MediaWiki, a free software wiki package originally written for Wikipedia. It is now used by several other projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation and by many other wikis.

[edit] Editing Drive the Americas

Detailed information on editing DtA can be found on Mediawiki's Help:Editing Pages website, but commonly used information is excerpted here.

It's very easy to edit the contents of a wiki. It only takes a few clicks.

  • Click the edit page tab at the top of the page.
  • Make changes to the text.
  • Click the Save page button.

Before you save a change, you can enter a short note in the Summary box describing your changes. Don't worry too much about this, or spend too much time thinking about it, but try to give a little description of what you just changed e.g. "fixed typo" or "added more information about sunflowers".

The summary gets stored alongside your edit, and allows people to track changes in the wiki more effectively.

[edit] Pictures

Upload your photos to Flickr and then share them in your wiki! Detailed information on formatting can be found at Mediawiki's Help:Flickr Basic Usage website, but commonly used information is excerpted here.

Usage is basically as follows : <flickr>{photoid}|{type}|{location}|{size}|{caption}</flickr>

Where:

{photoid} is the Flickr photo ID. This is the only compulsory parameter. All others are optional and will be detected automatically. Anything which isn't detected as on another parameter will be classified as part of the caption. If the photo URL is flickr.com/photos/username/45676782/, then the eight digits following the username is the Photo ID. When looking at a flickr photo (for example http://flickr.com/photos/83378741@N00/3134724965/), the number 3134724965 at the end of the web address is the Flickr ID. To post a framed, small picture at the right of the page, the following is correct: <flickr>3134724965|frame|right|m</flickr>

El Tunco, El Salvador
El Tunco, El Salvador

{type} is the image type (so 'thumb' / 'thumbnail' or 'frame' or nothing). Defaults to nothing.

{location} is the location (so 'right', 'left', 'center' or 'none'). Defaults to 'right'.

{size} is the size. Defaults to medium.

and {caption} is an image title. If left blank or not set then defaults to title of image from Flickr.

Type

  • "thumbnail" or "thumb": If a caption is written, it is shown below the image. Image defaults to placement on the 'right' unless overridden with the 'Location' attribute (see above).
  • "frame": If a caption is written, it is shown below the image.
  • (nothing specified): Original image size is preserved, no border is added around the image. If a caption is written, it is not shown.

Location

  • "right": Image including its box is placed on the right side of the page. The article text that follows the image flows around the image.
  • "left": Image including its box is placed on the left side of the page. The article text that follows the image flows around the image.
  • "center": Image including its box is placed in the center of the page. The article text that follows the image is placed below the image.
  • "none": Image including its box is placed on the left side of the page. The article text that follows the image is placed below the image.

Size This attribute is based on information on this page under the heading Size Suffixes.

  • "s": A small square, size 75x75 pixels
  • "t": Thumbnail, 100 pixels on the longest side
  • "m": Small, 240 pixels on the longest side
  • "-": Medium, 500 pixels on the longest side
  • "b": Large, 1024 pixels on the longest side (N.B. this option only exists for large original images)

Caption Any element which cannot be identified as one of the above is assumed to be caption text.
