Reason for taking this trip
We realized we would never get to just take off and do all the things we dreamed about unless we just took off and did them.
Why did you decide to drive?
Having a home base that was always with us seemed like a good idea with a kid. The van is mostly stocked with toys and snacks.
What type of car are you driving?
1971 VW Bus
Did you make any modifications to your car for this trip?
Many. The bus essentially got a semi-restoration including paint and upholstery before we left. Extra bright headlights. 12V refrigerator and 2nd battery. Superbright LEDS all over. Real shoulder-belts (didn't have them originally) Boge shocks and new tires. Custom sleeping platform up top. We blew our engine in Portland and got a brand new one that will hopefully take us wherever we want to go.
How did you save up or finance your trip?
Just working like mad and spending as little as possible.
How long do you plan on traveling?
It started as a year, but we're thinking it will be longer.
Where do you plan on driving?
We've spent 6 months in the US and Canada and just entered Mexico. The first goal is the tip of Argentina. Around the world could be next and would be accomplishing a life-long dream.
What were your family’s and friends’ reactions when you told them about your trip before you left?
Our friends were psyched and thought it was awesome. Our families' first reaction was apprehension and to worry about our safety, our future, etc. They quickly came around and have been supportive and proud of us for following our aspirations.
Did you speak Spanish before you left your home country? How much Spanish?
Nada. We've been listening to lessons on the car stereo since we entered Mexico and plan on taking immersion classes along the way. We're learning slowly and try to practice daily. Bode's learning too and we hope to all be fluent by the end of the trip.
Are you taking more Spanish lessons as you travel? If so, where and for how long?
Definitely, but undecided as to where. Possibly Guanejuato and definitely somewhere in Guatemala.
Do you have a favorite place or country that you have visited during your trip?
Tofino, BC was excellent. We really like the vibe in Portland, OR, Austin, TX and Savannah, GA. Montana was pretty cool too.
What was the weirdest thing you experienced on your trip?
Nothing too strange so far - just normal strange.
What was the worst border crossing?
The only one that was of any consequence was re-entering the US from Canada, but still no biggie. I think having a kid gets us off pretty easy.
Do you have any advice for others who may be considering driving the Americas?
If you don't do it this year, you'll just be one year older when you finally do.
Would you do it again?
Absolutely. Why didn't we do this sooner?!
Do you have a blog or a website describing your trip?
