Additional El Salvador Border Crossing Information

People's experiences vary depending on crowds at the border, corrupt or honest border officials, and rules can also change. Read more about individual experiences at specific borders in this article.

Entering El Salvador

Border name: San Cristóbal
Closest major cities: El Progreso, Guatemala and Santa Ana, El Salvador
March 25, 2012

No fumigation at this border crossing. Getting the customs (aduana) paperwork took forever, but there was no cost. Make sure to make 2 copies of the issues vehile permit, you will need one immidately after leaving the border area, and another you will have to surrender when you leave El Sal. El Poy, Honduras to San Ignacio, El Salvador
December 14, 2008
We crossed the Honduras-El Salvador border at El Poy-San Ignacio. We first encountered a small fumigation station, and for $3 US (El Salvador uses US currency) our car was quickly fumigated We then had to show our passports, which took seconds, but were told that the jefe was out to lunch so we would have to wait for him to return in order to secure a vehicle import permit. The officials took our Honduras vehicle import permit, copies of our passport, registration, and title, along with the vehicle import permit paperwork we had filled out during the 'jefes' leisurely lunch. The whole process took over an hour, with seemingly long periods of inactivity, but eventually we secured our vehicle import permit at no cost and continued on our way.

Exiting El Salvador

El Amatillo, El Salvador - entering into Honduras
April 6, 2012

Easiest border exit ever. Just make sure you have a copy of your permit before you get there. We crossed on Good Friday and the copy shop was closed. The first border guard that wants a copy is almost 2km from the actual border. We lucked out. More details here: http://www.liferemotely.com/trip-shenanigans/el-salvador/169-el-salvador...

El Amatillo, El Salvador
December 21, 2008'

We exited El Salvador at the Honduran El Amatillo border crossing. After showing our vehicle import permit along with 1 photocopy and our passports, we were directed toward the Honduran immigration station. One of the quickest exits weve had so far.
