Reason for taking this trip
I think all kids dream about taking a road trip with nothing to worry about but the surf, and we were no different. We decided that the regular American Dream wasn’t for us, and decided to build a surf shack in Nicaragua even though we had little to no money. To help pay for it we’ve developed a documentary of our trip, titled Life in Reverse that will be broadcast on Thirdstorm.tv
Why did you decide to drive?
Buses, trains and transit provide a lot of intimacy but they can’t get you everywhere and we want the freedom to go, see, and do everything. Plus, we think it’s just a whole different kind of travelling. Something we’ve never done and wanted to do. As well, once we arrive and are living in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua it will be nice to have a car to get around.
Are you also taking along pets?
No pets, but we’re all kinda animals
What type of car are you driving?
1999 Land Rover Discovery II
Did you make any modifications to your car for this trip?
Just a roof rack for extra space
How did you save up or finance your trip?
Mostly with a friend we love to hate: VISA. But we are also selling advertising, on a documentary we are making of the trip, to assist in funding.
How long do you plan on traveling?
We will be driving for 7 weeks, and then living in Nicaragua for 4 months
Where do you plan on driving?
Canada-West coast of the United States-Mexico-Guatemala-Belize-Honduras-El Salvador-Nicaragua. But eventually we would love to continue to the bottom tip of South America.
What were your family’s and friends’ reactions when you told them about your trip before you left?
We’ve been planning this for over 8 months and when we first started telling people we’re driving to Nicaragua, we got the whole spectrum of reactions, a lot of people didn’t even know where that was. But when we tell people we’re documenting and filming the whole journey they think we’re crazy. I still don’t think most people realize that it’s way more than a home video. I don’t think anybody thought it would be possible for us to build our dream home in our early 20's without any real money, really I’m not sure that we even did.
Did you speak Spanish before you left your home country? How much Spanish?
We all speak an extremely small amount of spanish...it's going to be a learning process that will hopefully add to the adventure.
Do you have a blog or website describing your trip?
Yes! Third Storm TV
