Buying a vehicle in Brasil....why not?

Hi all,

We are planning our trip at present.

Can I ask -why it appears that Santiago seems to be the place for purchasing vehicles?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of buying and travelling in a vehicle with chilian plates?

We would like to travel in a VW combi- these are reasonably priced in Brasil.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of buying and travelling in a vehicial with Brazilian plates?

I'd appreciate a bit of an insight into this..

Thanks

Nina...

Hi Nina

Hi Nina

I'm brazillian and live in Brazil. Everything here is quite burocratic. I think that due to this people are more used to buy car in Chile.

In order to register a car under your name you need to:

- Pay a place to make a car inspection and receive a document (basically they check if engine/chassis number are the same of register)

- Passport (in case of foreigners)

- CPF (like the US SSN) (foreigners can get a CPF number on a Brazil embassy)

- Proof of address in the city you are registering the car

Every year you need to pay IPVA (tax to own a vehicle), DPVAT (insurance for damages caused by car to people) and Licenciamento (licensing). These are like 4% of the vehicle price (every year)
